Waste Incinerator Stericycle Drawing More Opposition

SALT LAKE COUNTY IS ASKING GOVERNOR GARY HERBERT TO SHUT DOWN A MEDICAL-WASTE INCINERATOR, ACCUSED OF RELEASING TOXIC POLLUTION.

THE SALT LAKE COUNTY COUNCIL VOTED UNANIMOUSLY, THIS WEEK, TO MAKE THE REQUEST.

STERICYCLE INC. IS CHALLENGING A LIST OF CITATIONS -- FILED BY STATE REGULATORS, IN MAY -- AGAINST THE COMPANY'S BURN PLANT IN NORTH SALT LAKE.

THE INCINERATOR IS ACTUALLY LOCATED JUST INSIDE DAVIS COUNTY.  BUT OFFICIALS SAY EMISSIONS OFTEN BLOW OVER SALT LAKE COUNTY.

THE ILLINOIS-BASED COMPANY SAYS IT OPERATES IN FULL COMPLIANCE WITH STATE PERMITS, AND HAS IMPROVED EMISSIONS AND MONITORING EQUIPMENT.
