Accidental Shooting Claims the Life of a Brighton High School Student

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS POLICE SAY, A BOY, 17, DIED AFTER HE WAS ACCIDENTLY SHOT IN THE HEAD -- BY ANOTHER TEENAGER -- AT A HOME NEAR 30TH EAST, 68TH SOUTH.

AUTHORITIES SAY THE BOYS WERE WITH THREE OTHER TEENAGERS -- IN THE BASEMENT OF THE HOME -- WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

POLICE SAY THE TEENAGERS WERE PASSING AROUND A HANDGUN, AND FIRED IT SEVERAL TIMES, BELIEVING IT WAS EMPTY.

ONE ROUND STRUCK THE BOY, WHO DIED ON SCENE.

POLICE SAY SEVERAL ADULTS WERE UPSTAIRS IN THE HOME, WHEN THE SHOOTING TOOK PLACE.

THE 16-YEAR-OLD -- WHO FIRED THE GUN -- WAS ARRESTED, ON SUSPICION OF NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE.

ANOTHER 16-YEAR-OLD IS SUSPECTED OF RECEIVING STOLEN PROPERTY... BECAUSE THE GUN WAS REPORTEDLY TAKEN DURING A RECENT HOME BURGLARY IN THE AREA.

OFFICIALS SAY THE TEENS ALL ATTENDED BRIGHTON HIGH SCHOOL.
