Kennecott: No More Layoffs Will Be Necessary

Nearly half of the 270 Kennecott Copper employees -- who were offered early retirement, following the massive landslide in April -- have opted to take it.

That has allowed mine officials to announce this week, no additional layoffs will be necessary at the copper pit.

Qne hundred employees were laid off last month.  The company is also restricting overtime labor -- and moving several employees into new positions.

But they say, for the forseeable future, all of the remaining employees will be retained.

The 132 employees who accepted early retirement will receive a $20,000 bonus, and other perks, for leaving voluntarily.
