Study: Scans Link Migraines To Brain Abnormalities

Medical researchers say their work shows brain abnormalities in people who get migraines.  The team of researchers in Italy used MRI scans on 63 migraine patients and 18 healthy people, and measured cortical, or outer brain layer, thickness and surface area.  They found those who had migraines also had reduced cortical thickness in areas related to pain processing.

The researchers stress more study is needed to understand how the cortical abnormalities relate to migraine patients, but one researcher thinks they could make those who suffer migraines more susceptible to pain.  The study appears online in the journal "Radiology."
